Poetry Book Freebie

In my classroom, I love to use poetry to increase fluency.  Teaching poetry uses these 2nd grade common core standards: 2.RL.10 and 2.RF.4.   I made my students poetry books that they keep in their book boxes and I introduce a new poem every week.  Sometimes it is a rhyming poem, sometimes a chant, and sometimes a song.  I write the poem on chart paper and pass out a typed version for kids to cut out and glue int ehr books.  My students love taking out their poetry books during independent reading time and re-reading all the poems we have learned so far!

To see where I find the poems I use each week, check out this blog post.  Also, head over to my TpT store to pick up a free copy of my poetry book cover.  Directions for assembling the books are included in the product description.

Do you love to teach through poetry, as well?

Websites for the Elementary Classroom–Free E-Book

It’s official, I have published a book, an e-book that is.  Every Wednesday I write a Wednesday Website Suggestion on my blog, Raki’s Rad Resources.  This weekend, I compiled these suggestions into an E-Book that is available to you completely free!  This E-Book is Over 60 websites you can use in the elementary classroom - for free - all compiled into one free e-book by Raki's Rad Resources.a compilation of my “tried and true” favorite websites to use in an elementary classroom.  It has two sections, one sorted by grade level and one sorted by subject.  I hope that this compilation will be of benefit to those teachers who truly want to use websites as teaching tools, but are just not sure what sites to use.

You can download your free copy as a PDF file from Teachers Pay Teacher, or in the format that is best for your e-reader (Kindle, Nook, etc.) at Smashwords.  Either way, feel free to use and share this resource, and don’t forget to stop by Raki’s Rad Resources for next week’s Wednesday Website Suggestion!

HoJo is All About Halloween!

My favorite holiday has to be Halloween!

Back in high school we would do a full-out haunted house at the school, and I was always one of the masterminds behind it. We had several levels of spookiness - little kid, average, and crazy! Many parents went for the little kid one because they knew how scary it could be! Imagine going through a locker maze in a bed of steam when a guy with a REAL chainsaw (chain removed!) jumps out right in front of you! Needless to say it was a good time. :)

But that's off topic...

While I know many teachers aren't allowed to do anything Halloween related, I still wanted to create a post of wonderful Halloween freebies for those of us who can celebrate Halloween.

Click on the "boo" picture below to go check out all of the great K-6 freebies I've compiled!

Thanks for letting me share some of my Halloween story with you!
I hope to see you again soon!

Fine Motor Skills Dinosaur Activities for Pre-K

Hiya, It's Robin from Sweet Tea Classroom. If you know me, I'm big on fine motor skills for the little ones. I created this dinosaur themed activity for all who love to teach about dinosaurs. My main goal was to create an activity that promotes fine motor skills in a fun way.

fine motor skills activities
Plus, special education students and students with autism often need help developing fine motor skills and I think that this activity is a good fit too.

Learning Center Folder
This is a super way to teach color recognition as well as get students to work with letter and word recognition. Why just teach one topic when you can teach more at the same time, right? Integrate fun!

clothespin activities

Here's how it works. Let your little ones paint a set of clothespins. Paint one clothespin for each letter in the words for the colors that you'll use. So you will paint three red for R-E-D. We used tempera paint cakes. This is one of my school art supplies must-have items. Forget the jars or even the... gasp..powder. Use tempera cakes. I found these at Lakeshore--yep...I'm close to a store too. Lucky {and poor} me!

color recognition activity

Then add the letters to the clothespins with Sharpie markers or any type of permanent marker. You'll need to do this step or for my homeschool mamas, this is a super way to let older siblings help.

Now, what the kiddos will do is match or clip the clothespins to the stegosaurus that is the same color. Older kiddos will match the letters too. Notice how I left the letters off of the orange and yellow clips. This is for students who will have difficulty matching the letters too.

One student can work on this dinosaur folder center or you can make a dinosaur train for a small group activity. Place the dinosaurs in a circle and put the clothespins in the center.

This is a perfect way for little fingers to work with fine motor skills as they clip each clothespin to the dinosaur's back. Plus, they'll have fun learning. You can find out more about this activity at my teaching resource store {here}

Be sure to swing by my blog too! You can find me at Sweet Tea Classroom at www.sweetteaclassroom.com

Thanks, Robin Sellers
