Penguin Fun with Addition

Hi, friends!

It's Jeannie from The 2nd Grade Surprise.  I hope everyone has had a WONDERFUL week.

My kiddos have been working really hard on learning how to add two and three digit numbers.  I created 4 games to help them with the concept.  The games are centered around the common core standards 2.NBT.5 through 2.NTB.9 but could easily be adapted for older grades. The games have a penguin theme, which just happens to be my favorite animal.  My kiddos know this about me and will love playing these games just because of the penguins on them.

Here is a preview of what's included in the packet.

I hope everyone has a great rest of the weekend!

Lots of love,

Honoring our Veterans with a Great Resource

Veterans' Day is near and dear to my heart. My husband is a veteran of 30 years in the military. During those years he lost several soldiers during Desert Storm. I can't imagine how difficult it is for the loved ones of soldiers in Afghanistan today. I decided to put together a packet called "Honoring Veterans' on Veterans' Day".

There is a Shared Reading Book called, "What is Veterans' Day?" 2 Reading texts and Comprehension Questions for 2nd and 3rd Grades and 2 sets of Picture/Word/ Fact Cards, 2 Sets of Graphic Organizers and Writing Prompts at the 2nd and 3rd grade levels. Just click on the image above to check it out.

In honor of our veterans I have a few free Veterans' Day activities for you. Just click on the image below not only to access your freebies but find more free resources for Veterans'Day activities.
Thanks for all you do to make a difference for your students. Hope you will check out my blog and follow my TpT store.

Turkey Time and Math Stations

With Thanksgiving so early this year, I feel like Christmas is going to be sooner than I'd like.  I feel as if I've barely used my October math stations and now it is time to start pulling out everything turkey.  I use Debbie Dillar's Math Work Stations in my room.  We are going on year two.  I love the easiness of it all.  Once the stations are set up, I don't have to do a lot each week to prepare for math time.  During MWS I mill about the room interacting with each pair of students to make sure they are understanding the concepts of their particular station.

For November I created math stations that are aligned with the common core and Thanksgiving themed of course.  Make sure you stop by my blog to get more ideas as to how I use math stations and grab some freebies to.  If you are n need of some new math centers for November stop by my TpT store.  While you are there, check out my turkey headband- you know you want one.

I'm Done...Now What (SOLVED)

Hi, friends!

It's Jeannie from The 2nd Grade Surprise.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard the words "I'm Done...Now What" from my students.  Especially during writing! I decided to create some posters to place in my writing center so that students can see a model of the writing and choose which writing they would like to complete.  I also have placed templates for each writing in my writing center as well.  So far, my students are loving using the templates to create their masterpieces when they are finished with whatever writing they are working on for me.  Click the picture below to see my writing packet in my TPT store.

The posters included are: list, letter, poem, recipe, story, how to, scribble story, word search, card , small moment, and note.
Each poster has a template that corresponds with the poster.

I hope everyone is having a WONDERFUL weekend!

November Problem of the Day

Hello, dear friends!

It's Jeannie from The 2nd Grade Surprise.  Common core has came to my school like a lot of your schools as well.  I big  HUGE part of common core for math is word problems. YIKES!  My students have struggled with word problems in the past.  This year we have started a problem of the day.  I have seen such huge gains in their problem solving skills.  I made a November Problem of the Day flipchart to share.  It has a "November" theme to make word problems more fun.  The problems include addition and subtraction skills to 20 and counting coins to $1.00. Click on the picture below to download the flipchart.  Enjoy your Sunday, friends! :-)

Cursive Writing Tip: Use Watercolors and Brush Strokes Instead

Teaching cursive writing can be a bit challenging at times--for the teacher and the student. An easy way to integrate fun into cursive writing is to use watercolor paints. Students use the paint brushes to create the strokes, and they are able to feel the flow of the letters.
