Hanukkah Board Game Freebie
Hanukkah begins December 8th at sundown! Looking for a little something to help your kids celebrate Hanukkah? This game can be used in many ways in the classroom! Brain research tells us that frequent repetition helps bring information from the short term memory to the long term memory. (Rather than "Practice Makes Perfect", I prefer "Practice Makes Permanent"!) Saturday, December 1, 2012
Penguin Fun with Addition
It's Jeannie from The 2nd Grade Surprise. I hope everyone has had a WONDERFUL week.
My kiddos have been working really hard on learning how to add two and three digit numbers. I created 4 games to help them with the concept. The games are centered around the common core standards 2.NBT.5 through 2.NTB.9 but could easily be adapted for older grades. The games have a penguin theme, which just happens to be my favorite animal. My kiddos know this about me and will love playing these games just because of the penguins on them.

That's how I feel about this one, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker. I've done this activity with second graders for about 15 years now.
Every year, the children have loved this activity, and it practices some valuable skills: visualizing, summarizing, and sequencing. Plus, it gives them some exposure to classic holiday literature and classical music!
Come on over to Elementary Matters to enjoy this freebie! It's one of my favorites!

Is anyone else ready for winter?
But all of that wintery fun put me in the mood to finish my winter "big kid" unit. As always, I pulled out a freebie for you. This one is similar to my Halloween and Thanksgiving word work activity, but focused on winter words with themed ways to practice them. You can grab it over on my blog. I also included some of my favorite winter read alouds and would love to hear yours too so be sure to leave a comment when you're there.

Winter Holiday Show
I teach at a small, International School in Morocco. We are so small that we are our own Enrichment teachers (Art, Music and Drama). While this sounds like extra work, it’s actually a cool way to get to see a completely different side of our students.
Since I’m the “Drama Teacher” at this time of the year, I got to play the Holiday Show. The International School environment can be tricky when it comes to winter holidays. My students are very diverse and I want them to have a chance to appreciate that diversity, especially during the holidays. I looked and looked for a Holiday Play that would celebrate the extreme diversity found in a school like mine, and not just the big three winter holidays celebrated in the US – Christmas, Hanukkah and Kwanza. When I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I decided to write it. So, here it is, “a truly multicultural holiday play”. Named “Light Up the World with Celebrations” this holiday play, complete with 3 songs, celebrates light as the common factor among so many holidays celebrated worldwide. Some of the holidays included are: Christmas, Diwali, St. Martin’s Day, Las Posadas, Ramadan, Hanukah, Winter Solstice, Eid al F’tour, Kwanza and St. Lucia’s Day.
